A striking antique Sauj Bulagh long rug, woven by Kurds. The field is densely patterned with offset rows of stepped diamond medallions in saturated tones of madder red, indigo blue, soft ivory, teal green, and warm camel against a rich brown ground.
Sauj Bulagh rugs are particularly admired for their bold color and powerful village drawing. This example has an especially lively allover composition, with each stepped medallion carrying a small central cross form, creating a strong sense of movement across the narrow field. The design is framed by a beautifully articulated ivory vine-scroll border and an outer border of geometric forms.
With its long format, saturated palette, and wonderfully graphic drawing, this is a highly decorative Kurdish village rug with exceptional presence.
