A richly decorated baby carrier from the Xa Phang people, dating to the mid 20th century. Made from dark cotton cloth, it is embellished with vivid embroidery, appliqué, pieced textile panels, and rows of small metal studs that catch the light across the central panel.

Among the Xa Phang, baby carriers are both practical and deeply personal objects. They allow a mother to keep her child close throughout daily life while also serving as a highly visible expression of textile skill, care, and cultural identity. Each carrier was traditionally made with its own distinct design, reflecting the individuality of the child.

This example is especially striking for its bright geometric center panel, metal ornamentation, and long embroidered carrying straps. The contrast between the dark ground cloth and saturated pink, red, green, yellow, and blue decoration gives the piece a strong graphic presence, making it compelling both as an ethnographic textile and as a work of textile art.
