This tzute was woven in Guatemala in the 20th century.
A festive Guatemalan tzute, vividly woven with striped ground in red, green, and purple tones. The textile is enlivened by repeated brocaded figures of horse and rider, depicted in bright contrasting colors of yellow, green, blue, pink, and orange each wearing a wide-brimmed hat and rendered in a bold, geometric style.
Tzutes are multipurpose cloths, traditionally used in ceremonial contexts or as carrying and covering cloths, and this example stands out for its playful narrative imagery. The colorful warp-faced stripes and detailed brocade capture the creativity of Maya weaving traditions.
