This evocative Qajar rug depicts Nur ‘Ali Shah, the celebrated Sufi saint and poet whose image became widely cherished in the 19th-century.
Remembered as a figure of beauty, charisma, and spiritual devotion, Nur ‘Ali Shah helped embody the revival of Sufism in the Qajar period. His portrait was reproduced across paintings, lacquer, enamel, and carpets, becoming an icon of saintly presence rather than a simple likeness.
What makes this piece especially compelling is the inscriptional border, which identifies the central image and frames it as a protective devotional portrait. A working translation of the verse reads:
"Whoever beholds your image upon this small carpet is delivered from the troubles of the world, safe from the evil eye, and sheltered beneath the protection of the saintly Shah."
