This exceptional late 19th-century Shekarlu rug is a superb example of the bold, highly expressive weaving tradition of the Qashqai Confederacy. Its rich terracotta field is animated by an elegant arrangement of towering cypress and tree-of-life motifs, interspersed with a lively assortment of tribal devices, rosettes, birds, combs, and other protective talismanic symbols that reward close inspection.
The composition balances remarkable complexity with a strong architectural order. The rhythmic vertical procession of stylized trees creates a sense of movement through the field, while countless small geometric motifs fill the surrounding space without ever feeling crowded. A striking ivory border of linked octagonal medallions provides a luminous frame, beautifully contrasting with the warm field and emphasizing the rug’s graphic clarity.
The palette is especially vibrant, featuring glowing terracotta alongside saturated indigo, ivory, soft turquoise, and restrained accents of madder red and pale yellow. The natural dyes have mellowed beautifully over time, producing subtle abrash that enhances the rug’s depth and visual richness. Areas of old repiling (as pictured) are visible in isolated passages of deeper red, and speak to the rug’s long life and careful stewardship.Â
Finely woven with crisp drawing and an abundance of symbolic detail, this Shekarlu possesses the spontaneity and vitality that distinguish the finest tribal weavings. Its sophisticated design, balanced composition, and excellent state of preservation make it an outstanding collector’s example while remaining equally compelling as a decorative work of textile art.
