A richly patterned Tekke Turkmen ensi, traditionally woven as a door hanging for the entrance of a yurt. The classic four-part composition gives the piece its architectural quality, with paneled fields, vertical divisions, and layered borders that echo the idea of a threshold.
The palette is especially vibrant, with deep madder red, dark blue, ivory, orange, and small flashes of turquoise. Throughout the rug, the drawing is packed with Tekke ornament of serrated forms, stepped diamonds, comb-like devices, and repeating border elements that give the surface a dense, almost woven-in rhythm.
Ensi weavings are among the most evocative Turkmen forms because they are both functional and symbolic. They marked an entrance, separating interior from exterior, private from public, domestic life from the wider world. This example has a strong graphic presence, lively color, and a beautifully balanced composition.
A wonderful piece for the wall, where its original purpose as a textile doorway can still be felt.
