An atmospheric antique Tibetan thangka centered on a serene crowned Buddhist deity seated upon a lotus throne, surrounded by differently colored Buddhas and attendant figures. Their varied hues reflect the symbolic color vocabulary of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, in which color can indicate distinct Buddha families, qualities and forms of enlightened wisdom.
The figures emerge from a richly layered landscape of billowing cloud bands, lotus blossoms, mountains and dense foliage, all rendered in a beautifully aged palette of deep indigo, turquoise, blue-green, faded coral, rose and gold.
Extensive surface wear and craquelure speak to a long devotional history, giving the painting a softly timeworn, almost fresco-like character. The thangka retains its traditional textile mounting, with red floral brocade, a narrow indigo band and a broad golden-yellow silk surround woven with auspicious motifs.
An evocative example whose age, devotional wear and complex iconography give it a particularly compelling presence.
