A finely made lidded basket attributed to the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, constructed from broad strips of plant fiber in a tightly worked herringbone plait.
The tall, compact form is animated by a bold chevron pattern that shifts direction across the surface, giving the basket a distinctly architectural quality. The fitted lid continues the same interlocking weave, creating a unified sculptural form when closed.
The exterior has developed a deep brown-black patina, with warmer reddish tones showing through from years of handling and use. Inside, the fiber retains a softer natural brown, emphasizing the contrast between the basket’s functional interior and richly aged exterior surface.
Small lidded containers such as this were used for personal storage and everyday valuables. Its strong geometric construction, dark patina, and unusually sculptural silhouette make this a particularly expressive example of Kuba basketry.
