A finely made lidded basket attributed to the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tightly plaited from plant fiber into a compact, low rounded form.
The weaving radiates outward from the center in subtly shifting directions, creating a quiet sense of movement across the otherwise unadorned surface. The closely fitted lid and shallow base reflect the technical precision for which Kuba basketry is known.
Years of handling have given the exterior a deep brown patina, while the interior retains a warmer natural tone. The contrast emphasizes both the age of the object and its history of use.
