Vintage Mola cloth handmade by the Guna (previously spelled Kuna) people of the San Blas Islands. Mola is a reverse appliqué technique, similar to the technique used in quilting but using multiple layers of different-colored cloth that are first sewn together before a design is created by cutting away different layers. This saddle blanket was woven in Tibet at the turn of the 20th century. This rugs are known as a Makden and were intended to be used under a horse saddle in Tibet. This piece has been rendered in a beautiful butterfly format. It features two mirror image halves with floral forms growing out of stylized rocks on a vibrant orange ground.

This saddle blanket was woven in Tibet at the turn of the 20th century. This rugs are known as a Makden and were intended to be used under a horse saddle in Tibet. This piece has been woven in two pieces and attached with cotton fabric. Two leather pieces have been woven in to attach the blanket to the animal. Each half features a mandala filled with four bats on an orange ground and a lively blue cloud motif where the halves interface.. The outer border features cloud-bands and auspicious symbols.

Makden were intended to be used under a horse saddle in Tibet. Each half features a central lotus with mountains symbolic or the terrestrial and clouds symbolic of the celestial. Each side features one small stupa motif which represents the nature of reality or the Dharma. cloudbands which are seen either as shooting rain or rays of lights in all directions.
